Álvaro Uribe Vélez (nacido el 4 de julio de 1952 en Medellín, Antioquia) es un político y abogado colombiano que actualmente ejerce como presidente de la República de Colombia por el período 2006-2010. Fue reelegido para dicho cargo tras su anterior administración (2002-2006) después de que presentara un acto legislativo que modificó la constitución. Existen dudas sobre si el mandatario aspirará a un tercer periodo presidencial (periodo 2010-2014) por medio de un referendo popular que está en trámite.Uribe se graduó en derecho en la Universidad de Antioquia y cursó posteriormente estudios en administración, gerencia y negociación de conflictos en la Escuela de Extensión de la Universidad Harvard;[ fue también "miembro senior asociado" de un college de la Universidad de Oxford.Como político ha desempeñado diferentes cargos en las Empresas Públicas de Medellín, en el Ministerio del Trabajo y la Aeronáutica Civil, sirviendo como Alcalde de la ciudad de Medellín durante (1982), ejerciendo de senador de la República (1986-1994) y, más tarde, de gobernador de Antioquia (1995-1997), siendo finalmente elegido presidente de la República de Colombia en 2002.[9] Se informó el día 30 de agosto de 2009 que el presidente Uribe contrajo la Influenza AH1N1 mientras participaba en la conferencia de Unasur en Bariloche, Argentina.

Presidente de Colombia (2006-Presente)

Su mandato presidencial se ha caracterizado por la lucha frontal contra los grupos irregulares en Colombia y el narcotráfico bajo un programa de gobierno denominado política de seguridad democrática que es amparado en parte por el Plan Colombia y ha sido criticado por sectores de la oposición y disidentes. El gobierno de Uribe llevó a cabo una controvertida desmovilización de grupos paramilitares activos dentro de las AUC, que inluyeron la Ley de Justicia y Paz, para reducir los espacios de acción de las guerrillas como las FARC y el ELN.[48]Uribe ha buscado la firma de distintos tratados de libre comercio con otros países, principalmente con Estados Unidos. Ha sido acusado por sectores opositores y disidentes de presuntamente haber tenido relación con el Cartel de Medellín y el fomento del Paramilitarismo en Colombia, por lo cual ha sido investigado y encontrado inocente. Uribe ha negado cualquier relación con dichos sectores criminales, pero funcionarios de su gobierno y aliados políticos ha sido condenados en el escándalo de la Parapolítica, lo que ha generado cuestionamientos.

Uribe ha fomentado la Economía de mercado y una fuerte alianza estratégica con Estados Unidos, también criticada por crear dependencia de dicho pais. También en el campo internacional ha mantenido relaciones de altibajos con los gobiernos del venezoalno Hugo Chávez, el ecuatoriano Rafael Correa y el nicaraguense Daniel Ortega.Se han presentado diferentes controversias y críticas en torno al presidente Uribe, su entorno familiar y su desempeño en diferentes funciones públicas o políticas. Entre ellas se encuentran acusaciones por parte de Piedad Cordoba, Gustavo Petro y Virginia Vallejo sobre presuntos vínculos con el Cartel de Medellín y el Paramilitarismo en Colombia, lo cual ha negado tajantemente.

Álvaro Uribe Vélez (born on July 4, 1952 in Medellin, Antioch) is a politician and Colombian attorney who nowadays practises as president of the Republic of Colombia in the period 2006-2010.
